As a more eloquent writer described it “breakfast is the name of the game” at the Pork Store Cafe in the Haight. Id heard about the place from a co-worker who loved the place and decided to check it out on a Sunday as I went in to work (mental note: avoid Sundays at work if possible).
I arrived and didn’t expect a line but I was about 15 people deep at Noon. I knew this must be good. After a 15 minute wait I was shown to the counter and given the menu which covers lunch items but breakfast dominates. Obviously from my vantage point I had a good view of the cooking area and the crew works efficiently and quickly. Great smells of bacon and eggs dominated plus the pancakes look really good.
I settled for the Chicken Fried Steak plate which included my choice of toast or biscuits, two eggs, the steak patty and hash brown potatoes - cost was $8.50. These are generous portions and should fill most voracious eaters.
The wait was short and I had my meal in less than five minutes. The cooks there really have this menu figured out because the food was great - my scrambled eggs did not taste greasy nor did the hash browns. The biscuits were good but the gravy wasn’t the thick southern style that I like with the sausage pieces flowing. The patty was fried well and not at all heavy. If you’re eating this plate do you really care about things like cholesterol level monitoring?
I had a chance to ask the cook about the level of traffic and he was surprised that they were so slow - sometimes they run non-stop until closing at 4pm he said.
I am definitely going back and checking out the rest of the menu, especially the pancakes. If you are looking for a laid back breakfast with healthy portions, you will not be disappointed.
